The three essays and the interview that comprise this book were written between 1968 and 1971, a period marked by the struggle for civil rights, the student movement, and the Vietnam War. Hannah Arendt, then a professor in the United States, closely examined the distortion of politics through images and argued that power was distinct from violence, just as she affirmed that civil disobedience was a right of citizens.
We sought to create a composition with four similar forms, based on the fact that the book is composed of four essays. This initial, recurring form, along with the color blue, alludes to the American flag — the backdrop for the texts in the book. Furthermore, the forms also create a kind of frame, which relates to the author's perspective on the topic at hand. The spaces between the forms can be read as the "holes" present in the republic.
