More than a book of short stories, in "The woman who gave birth to a fish and other fantastic tales by Severa Rosa", the Maranhão State writer Rai Soares delivers narratives based on memories of the stories told by her grandmother and the conscious desire to express learning .
The stories feature black and native American women with their experiences as residents of a city in the interior of the state of Maranhão, at a time when electricity or running water were still not available, and food was planted and harvested in the backyard. Tales that reveal the magic of plants and narratives that go beyond what logic is capable of explaining. The work brings together stories of ancestry, memory and collectivity.
For the cover and graphic design of the book, we used illustrations by the author herself that refer to the dreamlike universe in which the storytelling takes place and the presence of its characters.
The book was a finalist for Jabuti Prize 2022 in the Short Stories category.
