Author of classic works of Brazilian literature, Graciliano Ramos (1892–1953) was also, though less well known, a public administrator during his lifetime. This aspect of his life is revealed in a book by researcher Edilson Dias de Moura.

The book originated from Moura’s doctoral research, which, by blending literary analysis, archival research, and history, uncovered new insights about the writer, culminating in a groundbreaking study of how Graciliano’s political stance in his public life directly influenced the writing of his novels.

Inspired by the author’s phrase “These true things may not be believable” and by the book’s approach, which addresses different aspects of Graciliano’s life and work, we created a pattern that simultaneously reveals and conceals parts of his name.

The visual design of the project alludes to the shifting meanings of a reality that may seem like an illusion. Inside, each chapter opening features a letter that, throughout the book, spells out the name “Graciliano.”
