In June, the Month of Black Music is celebrated in the United States. In addition, there is the national holiday Juneteenth, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people and is usually seen as a celebration of African American culture.
YouTube Music invited us to create the covers for four celebratory playlists created by Tuma Basa, YouTube's Director of Black Music and Culture: Black Music Is The Sun, Black Music Is The Source, Black Music Is Live and Black Music Is Love. In addition to the covers for the commemorative and Juneteenth playlists, we also created the covers for another 22 black music playlists on the platform.
Inspired by the themes of the musical selections – sun, fountain, life and love – we created 4 graphics for the main playlists, which have their names written in gestures (characteristic inspired by old notes by Afrika Bambaataa on her records). The system created for secondary playlists uses these graphics and intersperses colors from the palette created for the project.
